Held April 4, 2007, at the Max M. Fisher Music Center, Detroit

Communities throughout southeast Michigan are seeking new ways to thrive in a changing and challenging economy. This is especially true in neighborhoods facing disinvestment and a loss of population. Special attention was given to the use of catalytic projects and partnerships, and leveraging large-scale investments. Practical approaches and lessons learned were highlighted.

Presentations by Paul Brophy, principal of Brophy and Reilly LLC in Columbia, MD, and a nonresident senior fellow at the Brookings Institution, and Willie Jones, senior vice president and director of The Community Builders Inc., Boston.

Topic: Childhood Obesity

Southeast Michigan is experiencing some of the highest rates of overweight and obesity in the country among both adults and children. This epidemic threatens the current and future health of our region.

The Community Foundation for Southeast Michigan is committed to ensuring that all children in our region have the opportunity to grow up healthy and strong. Through partnerships with the media and with organizations that serve children and families, we are raising awareness of this important issue and providing information and resources to address the epidemic.

Our latest effort is a partnership with the University of Michigan's School of Public Health to present a series of educational programs to promote good nutrition and physical activity. The programs feature experts who address this epidemic and offer practical solutions to improve the health and well-being of children and adults.
