Guidelines for Grantmaking   Scholarships   Recent Grants

A number of funds at the Community Foundation for Southeast Michigan support the future of our region by investing in the education of its young people through scholarships or awards. Each program has specific eligibility requirements. Up-to-date information and application forms for most programs are available through the links below or can be obtained by calling or writing the Community Foundation.

DETROIT ECONOMIC CLUB SCHOLARSHIP: Counselor nominations: February 1, 2008 deadline. Student nominee scholarship packets: April 1, 2008 deadline. Applicants must be high school seniors in public or private high schools in Wayne, Oakland or Macomb counties who begin full-time college enrollment in the fall of 2008. Up to two $2,000 renewable scholarships are awarded each year. Each fall, a call for nominations is distributed to high school counselors in the geographic target area. Students must first be nominated by their counselor based on scholastic, social and financial need, and then invited to apply for scholarship consideration. Therefore, no application form is available online.

DETROIT TIGERS WILLIE HORTON SCHOLARSHIP: April 1, 2008 deadline. Applicants must be graduating seniors at Northwestern High School in Detroit. One nonrenewable scholarship of up to $5,000 is awarded each year. Applications are available at this link or at Northwestern High School. Download application (Download Adobe PDF Document)

ROBERT HOLMES SCHOLARSHIP: April 1, 2008 deadline. Applicants must be dependents of eligible Michigan Teamsters and high school seniors who will attend a Michigan college or university in the fall of 2007 as a full-time student. The program awards up to six $1,000 nonrenewable scholarships. Applications are available through this link or at any Teamster Union Local throughout the state of Michigan. CHRIS KURZWEIL SCHOLARSHIP: April 1, 2008 deadline. Applicants must be dependents of Intertape Polymer Group (formerly American Tape) employees and high school seniors who will begin full-time college enrollment in the fall of 2008. The program awards up to two $2,000 renewable scholarships.Download application (Download Adobe PDF Document).

CARY MOORE MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP FUND: April 2, 2008 deadline. This $1,500 annual scholarship is awarded to the male varsity athlete from North Farmington High School student who best personifies school spirit and good sportsmanship as determined by an advisory committee composed of faculty and staff. DICK DEPAOLIS MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP: April 2, 2008 deadline. This $500 scholarship goes to the North Farmington High School graduating senior who demonstrates leadership, good grades and is a male varsity athlete who will enter college majoring in liberal studies, especially History and English. Candidates are selected by a committee of faculty and staff. An application will be posted in the near future and will be available at North Farmington High School. THE RENAISSANCE OF VALUES SCHOLARSHIP FUND: Check with schools for deadline. Each year, a call for nominations is made to three area schools-Faith Christian Academy, Cornerstone Schools and Everest Academy-to select one candidate from each school for consideration to receive a nonrenewable scholarship of up to $6,000 for private high school education. Applications are available at the select schools; no application form is available online.

JEAN AND TOM ROSENTHAL SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM: April 1, 2008 deadline. Candidates must be graduating seniors at Pontiac Northern or Pontiac Central High School. The program awards two $1,000 scholarships that are renewable for an additional year. Notices of scholarship eligibility are distributed to all counselors and principals at each high school, and candidates are chosen by a committee of counselors and staff. VIRGIL K. LOBRING SCHOLARSHIP: April 1, 2008 deadline. This $1,500 scholarship is awarded to the Southwestern High School graduating senior who shows both leadership and academic achievement and demonstrates the greatest improvement from the time of his/her freshman year. JEPTHA WADE SCHUREMAN SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM: June 2, 2008 deadline. Applicants must be residents of Wayne, Oakland, Macomb, Lenawee, Monroe, Livingston, Washtenaw, or St. Clair counties at the time of high school graduation and must be fatherless either through death or through termination of parental rights. Recipients must attend one of the 15 nonprofit, public universities in Michigan and must be pursuing, or plan to pursue, a degree in the fields of law, nursing, medicine or dentistry. The program will award up to four scholarships of $7,500 to one of Michigan’s 15 public, nonprofit universities. Download application (Download Adobe PDF Document)

ORDOÑEZ FAMILY SCHOLARSHIP: April 1, 2008 deadline. Applicants must be residents of southwest Detroit and have attended a southwest Detroit high school for their entire secondary education. The program awards one scholarships of $2,500, renewable for up to four years. Download application (Download Adobe PDF Document)

OTIS M. SMITH SCHOLARSHIP: May 1, 2008 deadline. Applicants must be single mothers who are residents of Wayne, Oakland or Macomb counties and attend or will attend Wayne State University, any campus of the University of Michigan or Catholic University Law School in Washington, D.C. Priority is given to full-time students, but part-time students may also be considered. The program awards up to four nonrenewable scholarships of $3,000. SOUTHERN WAYNE COUNTY REGIONAL CHAMBER SCHOLARSHIP: April 1, 2008 deadline. Applicants must be high school seniors in one of the 21 communities in the Southern Wayne County Regional Chamber service area (Allen Park, Belleville, Brownstown, Ecorse, Flat Rock, Gibraltar, Grosse Ile, Huron, Lincoln Park, Melvindale, River Rouge, Riverview, Rockwood, Romulus, Southgate, Sumpter, Taylor, Trenton, Van Buren, Woodhaven, Wyandotte) who will begin full-time college enrollment in the fall of 2008. The program awards up to two renewable scholarships of $1,000. Applications are available through this link or from high school counselors at schools in the target area. ENRICO AND MARIE VESPA SCHOLARSHIP: May 1, 2008 deadline. Applicants must be employees of English Gardens or their legal, custodial dependents enrolled as full- or part-time students in any form of higher education. The program awards up to three $2,500 scholarships. While these scholarships are nonrenewable, prior year recipients may reapply for future scholarships. IMELDA "MEL" AND RALPH LeMAR SCHOLARSHIP: April 1, 2008 deadline. Applicants must be graduating seniors at Fowlerville High School who will major in chemistry, physics, electrical or mechanical engineering. The program awards one nonrenewable scholarship of up to $900. Notice of eligibility is made known through public notices and classroom presentations at Fowlerville High School, and the candidate is chosen by a committee of faculty and staff.
